Follows on from achieving the highest ever Design and Procurement BREEAM score (84%)confirmed by BRE as highest score ever achieved by any building in UK since 1998.

Great Glen House, Inverness Scottish Natural Heritage's (SNH) new office in Inverness has received a "mention" at Civic Trust Awards 2007 ceremony held in Blackpool Recognising outstanding examples of architecture and environmental design as well as the impact and benefits brought to the local community, the 2007 Awards looked to the UK's countryside and county towns for its award winners

Fraser McAlister, Director of Turner and Townsend, said: "We are delighted that the Scottish Natural Heritage office has been recognised by the Civic Trust as an exemplar of environmental design and construction".

"Working closely with SNH and the rest of the design team, we responded postively to the challenge of constructing a truly sustainable building for the city of Inverness".

This follows on from achieving the highest ever Design and Procurement BREEAM score (84%)confirmed by Building Research Establishment (BRE) as the highest score ever achieved by any building in the UK since 1998.

At the contract tendering stage SNH insisted that the new building should achieve an "Excellent" rating under the BREEAM system.

BRE worked closely with project managers Turner and Townsend and SNH to write a sustainable brief for the building, evaluate the tenders and then monitor the design and construction against the brief.

The building was developed by Robertson Property Limited and designed by architects Keppie Design.

URS were employed as BREEAM assessor and sustainability advisor to the developer team.

Keppie Design and URS worked closely together to meet the sustainability requirements of the brief.

The offices are naturally ventilated, have high exposed concrete slab ceilings and are adjacent to a large atrium.

The detailed carbon calculations predict that the building will achieve the carbon target set in the brief of less than 8kg/carbon/m2/yr.

The building uses Green Guide to Specification "A" rated materials for the walls, roof, windows and all materials have been screened for their environmental impact and against the deleterious materials listed in the tender documents.

Slates have been reclaimed from the demolition of the former nurses home on the site.

These have been re-used site as external cladding on the stair towers of the new building.

Timber re-claimed from the original building has also been re-used in the new building for internal timber finishes.

An environmental management system has been used to manage the environmental impacts in the construction phase.
