Leading education consultants Turner and Townsend assist Gateway College, Leicester in relocation plans.

Leading education consultant Turner and Townsend has become the latest firm to join the team appointed by Gateway College, Leicester to deliver the relocation from its existing city centre site at The Newarke to a new site at Church Farm, Hamilton.

Turner and Townsend were appointed by the College in March 2007 to provide Quantity Surveying and Employer's Agent services.

The new Gateway College will be located in a 12 acre site adjacent to Hamilton Way.

The development, with an estimated construction cost of circa.

GBP20m, will comprise 11,000m2 of flexible accommodation over three floors including individual curriculum hubs, student services facilities, a theatre, and sports hall.

Externally, a football pitch and multi-purpose courts will be provided together with car and cycle parking facilities.

Funded largely by Gateway College asset disposals, a short term borrowing facility and with support from the Learning and Skills Council, the project will provide 1,500 places for 16 to 19 year-olds; 350 more than currently available.

Larry Greenwell, Director at Turner and Townsend said, "One of the main challenges for the Gateway College project from a cost perspective will be the need to align the aspirations of the key stakeholders within the constraints of the available budget".

"Another major consideration in the project planning will be to ensure a smooth transition to the new site in order to avoid disruption to curriculum activities".

Turner and Townsend is currently managing the construction, development and refurbishment of more than 40 schools, colleges and university commissions across the Midlands, and in addition, is providing construction cost consultancy services on the new Performing Arts Centre in Rutland Street, Leicester designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects.
