The judges were particularly impressed with the "comprehensive practice of sustainable values." They said: "The sympathetic fit of this sustainable building with its landscape was the most outstanding feature." Gary Easton, Director of Turner and Townsend, said: "We are delighted that the Scottish Natural Heritage office has received another award in recognition of its exemplar environmental design and construction".
"Working closely with client, we were able to bring our expertise in eco-building and sustainability consultancy to construct a landmark building for the city of Inverness with minimal impact on the sensitive surrounding environment".
This follows on from achieving the highest ever Design and Procurement BREEAM score (84%) confirmed by Building Research Establishment (BRE) as the highest score ever achieved by any building in the UK since 1998 as well as receiving a special mention earlier this year in the Civic Trust Awards 2007, and numerous other awards.
As project managers, cost managers and sustainability consultants, Turner and Townsend assisted Scottish Natural Heritage to develop the business case, develop the procurement strategy, write a sustainable brief for the building, evaluate the tenders and then monitor the design and construction against the brief.
Scottish Natural Heritage HQ now joins recent winner of the RICS North East Renaissance Awards 2007, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima), in the worldwide final to be held in London in October 2007.
This brings together all of the regional winners who will battle it out for the prestigious title of Building of the Year.
