Royal opening for Turner And Townsend landmark hospital building project, the new Cardiology and Surgical Unit at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport

Turner and Townsend project managed the new Cardiology and Surgical Unit (CandSU) at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport that was officially opened on Thursday 7 June 2007 by Princess Anne.

The development included new surgical theatres and a cardiology diagnostic and treatment unit within a new building.

As one of the first major Procure 21 schemes and working to a new form of contract NEC ECC, the project posed significant challenges for Turner and Townsend in managing the delivery of a new facility in the heart of a fully operational hospital site.

Turner and Townsend worked closely with the Trust and other members of the project team to manage the development improving teamwork, communication and co-ordination whilst mitigating any associated risks and engaging the numerous stakeholders.

Turner and Townsend Project Manager, Chris Briscoe commented that: 'Although the project was challenging, it demonstrated the benefits of true teamwork with our project management ensuring successful delivery of the first major Procure 21 schemes undertaken by a Foundation Trust using borrowing from the NHS Bank'.

Following the success of this project, Turner and Townsend is now continuing to work with the Trust on the next phase of development at Stepping Hill Hospital having forged lasting relationships between the client, contractor and project team.
