Tyco Thermal Controls' trace-heating systems have been installed for frost protection on the external chiller and heating pipes at Swindon's new Great Western Hospital.

The new hospital, located at Commonhead close to the M4 (Jct.15) and Swindon town centre, opened in early December and has been built to serve Swindon and north Wiltshire - replacing the old Princess Margaret Hospital.

Crown House Engineering commissioned Jointing Technologies to design and install a high reliability frost protection system for the plastic pipe service lines at rooftop level and around external plant rooms.

This it achieved with Tyco Thermal Controls' energy-efficient electric heat-tracing system, comprising over 700 metres of Raychem self-regulating heating cable in six circuits and controlled using Digitrace Raystat-Control-10 line-sensing thermostats.

The advanced Raystat-Control-10 is an intelligent control unit, capable of delivering energy savings up to 80% due to its proportional ambient temperature control.

Unlike conventional thermostats which activate the cable at full power, Raystat-Control-10 calculates the optimum heat requirements as a function of the ambient or pipe temperature, determines just how much power is needed for the ambient conditions and powers the cable accordingly.

Tyco Thermal Controls offers the commercial construction industry a wide range of energy efficient heat-tracing technologies and heating cable formats for frost protection, hot water temperature maintenance and ramp heating.

Its Raychem frost protection cables are suitable for use with any type of pipe material from copper, stainless steel and composite metals through to plastic.

The company also offers an extensive range of Raychem and Digitrace thermostats, accessories and fixings, for use with its self-regulating heating cables, to provide total system integrity and operational energy savings.
