Cutting Pro Competition is being organised by the Austrian abrasives manufacturer, Tyrolit.

Duncan Woodward of Kingstar Contracts, the Hitchin-based diamond drilling and sawing specialists, won the UK heat of the first ever international competition involving professionals in the concrete cutting and drilling industry The event for British entrants took place on the UK subsidiary's stand at the SED 2008 show, Corby, on 14th May 2008

All 15 contestants were asked to carry out three concrete cutting tasks - wall sawing, core drilling and hand-held cutting.

They were judged on speed, with the fastest overall time winning, but proficiency, experience and safe use of the machines were prerequisites for entry.

Overall winner, Duncan Woodward, showed remarkable consistency across all three disciplines, winning the drilling test and coming second in both wall sawing and hand-held cutting, accumulating a total of 80 points.

His nearest rival was James Evans of Britannia Cutting Services, Dartford, with 68 points.

He took first place in both the wall sawing and hand-held sawing but only managed eight points in the drilling section.

Third place went to Chris Holmes of London Diamond Drilling Services with 54 points, partly a result of achieving second place in the core drilling.

The three winning contestants received high value prizes, both for themselves and for their employers, from managing director of Tyrolit in the UK, John Willis.

Well-known TV personality, Keith "Cheggers" Chegwin, compered the competition and the award presentations with considerable panache.

Seven national competitions are taking place in these European championships, which Tyrolit likens to sports competitions, even calling the entrants "athletes".

The Spanish and Swiss heats were held earlier in the year.

After those in Italy, France, Scandinavia and Germany have been completed, the winner and runner-up in each competition will be invited to the Grand Final in Austria in January 2009.
