Union Square Workspace Knowledge Management Portal

An Union Square Software product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Jul 4, 2007

Construction consultancy, Butler and Young Group , placed an order for Workspace a web-based information sharing portal from specialist construction software author, Union Square.

The move is part of BYL's continued improvement to internal processes which was especially necessary as the organisation continued to grow.

As such, post implementation all corporate information will now be stored in a single central repository which will significantly reduce the volume of paper-based correspondence and make it easier for staff to share information, across its 24 UK offices.

Founded in 1996, BYL is a construction consultancy providing advice to all parts of the industry in both the public and private sectors.

It specialises in offering approved inspector and consultancy services in the fields of fire safety, structural engineering, access and environment.

An expanding workforce meant that BYL had to re-evaluate how information was stored and relayed throughout the organisation.

Employees had been dependent on a bespoke organic intranet system to access and distribute corporate information but it was increasingly apparent that to continue to improve information sharing a dedicated software solution was required.

Paul Wilkins, Chief Executive at BYL, comments on the issues faced by the organisation, "Until recently we have used an internal intranet system to store and share the majority of crucial business information.

This was reliant upon a self developed access database system.

We now feel that it is time to implement a more effective information management system to improve the flow of information throughout the organisation.

Having implemented Workspace, BYL will now have a central portal for all business and project-specific information, helping employees to easily share information and communicate more efficiently with one another, increasing productivity through the business.

Employees will also have increased visibility of all documents in the system, including email which will be stored centrally, and will have to spend less time searching for the correct document.

Wilkins concludes, "We believe that with Workspace in place we now have a far more robust knowledge management system which we hope will directly correlate to a more efficient working environment.

We are only at the early stages of implementation and already Union Square has impressed us with their high level of knowledge and expertise, we look forward to a continued working relationship".
