South East Water Selects Uponor's
Puriton
South East Water recently trialled Uponor's Puriton barrier pipe for the installation of a new water main on a contaminated site.
In preference to ductile iron, polyethylene (PE) wrapped steel and other PE barrier pipe systems, South East Water recently trialled Uponor's Puriton barrier pipe for the installation of a new water main on a contaminated site The project, managed by Dynamco on behalf of South East Water, in Alton, Hampshire, was to lay 200 metres of 110mm Puriton, and work commenced in March 2003

Uponor 110mm profuse ideal for pipebursting
Uponor trial the use of 110mm ProFuse pipe for pipebursting 4" iron mains using the TT Rollerblade pipebursting system with reduced diameter bursting head.
The work included the use of Puriton fittings for bends, pipe couplers, hydrants and two 63mm tees for the connection to a domestic development of three blocks of flats, and is now almost complete.
The contaminated land, on Paper Mill Lane, had originally been the site of a large paper mill, and a soil survey had revealed various contaminants, necessitating protective pipe.
South East Water has a standard policy of installing plastic compound pipes where land is not contaminated, and wrapped iron where contamination is present.
But having looked at Uponor's Puriton, which has an impenetrable aluminium barrier sandwiched between two PE layers, Dynamco project manager Dave Royan realised there would be some additional bonuses for South East Water: "Using this type of pipe has brought us a cost saving of 26%, with the added benefit of a reasonable choice of diameters providing flexibility.
We have also had good feedback so far from our contractors Clancy Docwra, who installed the pipe." Puriton's inner and outer plastic layers offer the same benefits as standard PE water pipes, plus flexibility, eliminating corrosion and encrustation and reducing head losses.
It is available in diameters from 25 to 110mm, and comes in straight lengths or coils.
All Puriton fittings are designed to give full barrier protection across the joints with no need for additional wrapping after installation, and the service pipe can be bent and formed using the same techniques as for copper pipes, thereby saving installation costs and materials.
Clancy Docwra personnel were fully trained on the installation of the hydraulic fittings, and found their use with Puriton to be quick and simple to install.
