Gas Pipe Insertion System Renovation
Revolution
An innovative gas pipe insertion system introduced by Uponor is helping gas engineers quietly get on with the major task of renovating domestic gas service pipes all over the UK.
ServiFlex is a flexible twin wall corrugated polyethylene (PE) liner pipe that is inserted into existing metallic gas service pipes, avoiding the previous need for costly excavations and installation practices The liner is inserted from the gas emergency meter control valve to the distribution main, negotiating swept bends and 90deg elbow fittings while maintaining maximum flow capacity

The ServiFlex gas pipe renovation system was jointly developed by Uponor, BG Transco and Synthotech Special Products, and won an award from the Pipeline Industries Guild when it was first introduced in 2000.
Since then it has been taken on board by gas engineers all over the UK to minimise disruption to householders during gas pipe renovation work, and it has certainly deserved the award it received in April 2000 for 'most significant contribution to land-based pipeline technology'.
As Uponor's principal engineer (technology implementation) Derek Muckle commented: "Now it's all about minimal disruption, whether it's a major pipeline utility project, motorway refurbishment or domestic extension.
Traffic must be kept flowing and people must be able to continue their normal business, so the less individual and residential disruption and the fewer roads and gardens that have to be dug up the better.
"ServiFlex means a gas engineer can be in and out of a domestic property in only a matter of a few hours, whereas previously this type of job would have taken days and meant major disruption for the house dweller." ServiFlex is currently available in 20mm/1" diameter size, the standard service pipe size around the UK, although Uponor is also planning to develop other sizes within the ServiFlex range in due course.
More information on the ServiFlex gas pipe renovation system is available from Uponor.
