Multi-utility pipe provider Uponor has been awarded a major contract from United Utilities to supply all plastic gas and water pipes and fittings for three major operational areas in the UK The contract is estimated to be worth GBP42.5 million over three years, with the potential to extend for a further two years

It covers plastic pipes and fittings requirements for the North West, North East and Wales, and is the biggest contract United Utilities has awarded in pipes and fittings to a single supplier.

It includes the company's utility asset management service areas in water and gas for Welsh Water and Northern Gas Networks.

United Utilities is the UK's largest multi-utility services provider.

It owns and operates water and electricity networks in the North West of England and manages utility and business process services for clients throughout the UK and overseas.

Uponor became the UK's largest provider of gas pipes and fittings in polyethylene after winning 100 per cent of what was then Transco's entire UK network, prior to the recent sale of four distribution networks.

Uponor managing director, Stuart Godfrey, was delighted that Uponor had been chosen to be the sole supplier to United Utilities' water operations in the North West whilst continuing to provide products and systems to both Welsh Water and the new Northern Gas Networks: "We believe we have what utilities are looking for in capability and product quality, and the innovations we are able to bring about in partnership with our customers lead to continued installed cost reductions".

United Utilities head of procurement Norman Davies commented on the award: "We were looking for an efficient supply chain partner to help us continue to be 'the market leader' and Uponor demonstrated it has what we require".

"We can create increased efficiencies through this multi-utility approach, which will bring long-term benefits to all the areas we are involved with as well as to all water and gas users".

Uponor will be supplying its potable blue polyethylene and PVC water pipes and fittings, such as its ProFuse and MOndial ranges, as well as its Puriton potable water system for contaminated land, along with ProFuse multi-layer and polyethylene gas pipes and fittings and black PE non-potable water pipes.
