Baxi Ecogen wins Innovation Award

A Baxi product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Nov 21, 2008

Baxi is celebrating the success of its micro-CHP (combined heat and power) unit, Baxi Ecogen, at the CHPA (Combined Heat and Power Association) conference and awards.

It won the Innovation category for its work in developing the Baxi Ecogen as a direct replacement for a wall hung gas boiler.

Mark Kelly, CEO Baxi Group UK and Ireland, said: "We are delighted to be recognised for our investment and ground-breaking work in developing a micro-CHP product that will cut carbon emissions, help to reduce householders' dependence on the national grid and address some of the problems of spiralling energy bills and fuel poverty".

""Our extensive field trials have shown that Baxi Ecogen is a natural successor to the conventional boiler - as a direct replacement for a wall hung gas boiler, it is readily accepted by the householder.

"We are pleased that the Government has recognised the importance of micro-CHP as a microgeneration system and has included it, along with other products such as solar and wind turbines, in the Energy Bill".

Baxi Ecogen uses a Free Piston Stirling Engine to generate up to 1kWh of electricity for use in the home.

Surplus electricity can be returned to the grid.

Comprehensive field trials have been carried out in a variety of homes with different energy demands, and the units have been providing heating and hot water for the occupants, in some cases for over a year.

They have consistently produced two thirds of the households' electricity requirements, of which one third has been used in the home and one third exported back to the grid.

The aim of the CHPA is to promote the wider use of combined heat and power and community heating, working with its members, Government and other non-Government organisations.

Baxi Group recently signed a preferred supplier agreement with British Gas to distribute Baxi Ecogen when it becomes commercially available in 2009.

The agreement could generate revenue for the group of up to GBP40m per annum.
