VSO, the international development charity that works through volunteers, is urgently looking for experienced construction engineers to work in the Pacific islands of Vanuatu.

VSO, the international development charity that works through volunteers, is urgently looking for experienced construction engineers to work in the Pacific islands of Vanuatu Transportation on Vanuatu, which is made up for over 80 mountainous tropical islands, is a major obstacle to improving and sustaining economic growth in rural areas

The road network is in a poor condition, which affects rural people's access to markets and services therefore directly impacting on their ability to earn money and participate in the economic, social and political life of the country.

The Government of Vanuatu has planned a road maintenance training programme to ensure basic transportation facilities are kept operational.

The government plans to implement the programme at a provincial level and so needs two VSO volunteers to help provincial units strengthen their project and financial management skills, plan training and implement the programme.

VSO is looking for people with a professional background in construction and engineering with strong project management, strategic planning and financial management skills to work in Vanuatu for 18 months to two years.

Larry O'Donnell, placement co-ordinator at VSO, says: "In developing countries, essential services like healthcare and transport cannot operate without a good infrastructure".

" In Vanuatu VSO is working with the government to improve this and urgently needs experience engineers to help." "The placements would suit professionals who are flexible and can adapt their professional experience to working within a new and often challenging environment".

" We would encourage people with a relevant qualification, primarily at degree level, and with at least two years experience to apply." Professionals wishing to volunteer with VSO should be prepared to give two years of their time.

In return they receive a modest living allowance, return flights, accommodation provided by the local employer, medical and travel insurance cover, national insurance and pension contributions, visas and work permits, grants before, during and after the placement and a guaranteed minimum of three weeks holiday per year.

VSO also has placements currently available for engineers to work in hospital maintenance in Mongolia, and for irrigation engineers in Malawi.

For more information about these and other placements please contact VSO on 020 8780 7500, email enquiry@vso.org.uk
