Apollo Chosen For New Trunk Main In Cheshire

Apollo from Wavin Plastics is a socketed push-fit system for potable water distribution.
Manufactured from molecular orientated PVC-O, which builds on proven properties of PVC-U, but is substantially tougher and lighter in weight, Apollo was chosen for a new trunk main in Cheshire.
The new trunk main transports potable water over a stretch of nearly 25 kilometres from an aquaduct in Bickerton to the water treatment works in Oswestry on to the Prescott reservoir, the main water source for Liverpool.
Gravity moves the water through the first section of the pipeline, before it goes through a pumping station at the Woore Ash sewage reservoir.
The customer evaluated various systems and Apollo blue 12.5 bar 315 mm was chosen for the £400,000 contract based on its product benefits and cost effectiveness.
From contract sign off, Wavin was able to fulfil the complete order within only ten months.
"We were faced with very stiff competition when we submitted the tender for this project", commented Eamonn Quinn, Wavin business development manager.
"Feeding into the reservoir providing a big city like Liverpool with drinking water, the pipeline has to be extremely reliable.
For this long stretch of the trunk main Apollo proved to be the right material and economical choice." Special care had to be taken during the installation of the extensive pipe run.
On its way through rural Cheshire the pipeline passes ponds which are breeding grounds for the rare Great Crested Newt.
A special license had to be obtained from DEFRA to carry out work near the ponds, but the contractors made sure to stay at least 250 metres from the ponds' perimeter.
Apollo's special strength and pressure resistance makes it the pipe of choice for long distance potable water pipelines.
The pipe is substantially tougher than other PVC pipes, providing extra ductility while achieving a high safety factor.
Apollo is designed for open-cut narrow trenching.
The lightweight six metre flexible lengths, each with an integral push-fit socket for above ground jointing, are quick and easy to install.
