Part H of the Building Regulations states that where a soakaway is not possible an attenuation system should be used.
"Overall run off on this particular greenfield site was substantial and had to be accommodated in a very restricted public surface water system, so we had to consider attenuation techniques," said Peter George, Wessex Water, development engineer team leader.
"There was a choice of options available to the developer ranging from conventional open ponds to concrete culverts, but through consultation with Ford Civil Engineering, Wessex Water and Wavin's technical team, Betterment Properties elected to use Wavin's AquaCell modular stormwater management system." Peter continues "The trial is an important exercise because we needed to analyse the quality and effectiveness of the system in construction and operation.
As Wessex Water has been requested to adopt the unit as an ancillary part of the drainage system and be responsible for its operation and maintenance, we have to be confident that this is a robust system that will offer a permanent and effective solution to minimise the risk of flooding on the site in the future," said Mr George.
