Wavin Plastics makes a splash for charity

Wavin Plastics, a leading provider of water management solutions, made a real splash at the annual Thames Water Raft Race with a raft made entirely from drainage piping.

A range of pipes, manufactured for the company's Osma UltraRib foul and surface water (adoptable and non-adoptable) gravity sewer system, were fitted together and used to carry daring volunteers down stream at the event.

Wavin pledged continued support to the event after getting involved with it in 2006 when the company's AquaCell water management infiltration units were bound together and coated with geomembrane to provide participants with a purpose-built raft.

Spokesperson for Wavin Plastics, Denise O'Leary, said: "We are delighted to support this fun event for such a worthy cause".

"Wavin is committed to helping build sustainable water supplies and sanitation systems in poverty-stricken countries through various projects including WaterAid and also through its long-standing partnership with Unicef".

The Thames Water Raft Race is co-ordinated and staged by WaterAid, a registered national charity which works to improve the lives of people in deprived countries whose lives are blighted by poor sanitation and dirty water.

WaterAid also works to lobby governments to change their water and sanitation policies to help vulnerable communities.

More than GBP8,000 has already been raised from this year's event with additional money still to be collected.

Teams, mostly in fancy dress, raced a distance of 1.6km.
