An innovative health and safety campaign has led to Warings Contractors passing a construction industry record of three million man hours without a reportable accident New standards of executive accountability, process management and detailed planning have led the South of England contractor to an outstandingly low injury count

Warings has now passed three million man hours without a reportable accident, a vast improvement on the industry average of 13 accidents every million man hours.

Len Salter, Chief Executive of Warings, said: "To inspire a health and safety culture change within a construction firm takes time and effort but we have been rewarded with a dramatic reduction in accidents.

"Our stringent health and safety processes save lives, and have now been adopted by many of our clients as they have witnessed the success of these innovations".

Warings' health and safety initiative was founded on a branding campaign entitled "Can You Hear Voices?" which was inspired by BAA and developed by Chief Executive Len Salter.

Len Salter explained: "The 'Can You Hear Voices?' campaign was focussed on appealing to the subconscious of all workers on Warings' projects and ensuring that they gave proper thought to putting themselves in dangerous positions".

Warings 'Top Tips' for improved health and safety are:.

1) Executive accountability - the Chief Executive is responsible for health and safety across the company, ensuring that it is managed from the very top.

2) Communication - the company message must be conveyed to all sites and sub-contractors to develop the process of sharing information.

3) Review process - a full review procedure for every accident is carried out by the Board at head office and a resulting action report produced.

4) Continuous improvement - The goals for reducing injury rates have been re-set every year; the target is now to reach 5 million man hours without an accident.

5) Education - Warings conducts pre-construction planning workshops and collaborative safety planning with all parties involved on projects.

Following these guidelines the Warings Airports Team, a framework contractor with BAA have not had a Reportable Accident for almost five years, during which time they have turned over in excess of £75,000,000.

Roger Bayliss, Construction Director, BAA Capital Projects said: "Warings' leadership of health and safety on BAA projects has been a shining example to the industry, they are to be congratulated".
