Wessex Loves To Be Beside The Seaside.

A Wedge Group Galvanizing product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team May 31, 2004

Leading galvanizing specialists in the south-coast region, Wessex Galvanizers Ltd, are really getting in the 'holiday mood' with three important contracts for new developments beside the seaside.

The company, based in Eastleigh, Hampshire, has been contracted by fabricators, Bailey Fabrications and its business partner Almar Fabrications, to supply galvanized steel for the balconies of a new £20 million-plus luxury apartment complex called Ocean Village Marina in Southampton.

The first phase of Ocean Village site comprised five apartment blocks, each requiring 40 tonnes of galvanized steel, with a large number of further blocks scheduled to be built in future phases by developers Wilson-Bowden Developments.

Wessex, which employs a staff of 30 and galvanizes an impressive 7,000 tonnes of materials per year, was awarded the contract following a competitive tender.

The second of Wessex Galvanizers' seaside contracts was at the Butlin's holiday and leisure centre at Bognor Regis, Sussex, where galvanized staircase units were required to be installed against a very tight deadline.

Wessex's Technical Sales Representative, Richard Whiddett, said that the newly refurbished Butlin's campus at Bognor includes a marquee-style dome, similar in appearance to the Millennium Dome: "Our job was to supply 15 staircases for our customer, Trident Construction.

We needed to complete these in a one-week turnaround because the old staircases were being removed and the new ones installed while the centre was being used.

We were able to get the complete job completed between a Wednesday and Friday." He explained that there is a further possibility for Wessex to galvanize a further 115 staircases for Butlin's at Bognor Regis, and a similar number at Butlin's at Minehead, Somerset - a project projected to last over three years.

A coastal caravan park at Selsey, near Chichester in Sussex, is the site of Wessex Galvanizers Ltd's third recent seaside contract success.

There, the company is supplying 40 tonnes of structural steel for an advanced new swimming pool complex, after winning the contract from its customers, B.
