Waste is booming business for wedge

Wedge Group company South East Galvanizers has proved it has what it takes when it comes to handling large-scale steel components for one of the toughest industrial applications - waste disposal.

Thanks to South East's impressive 9.5 metre long x 1.7 metre wide x 3 metre deep bath facility at its site in Witham, Essex, the company has won important new business in the fast-growing area of domestic waste disposal equipment.

Its customer is Suffolk-based Copperfield Engineering, the designer and developer of the first specialist retractable roof for bunkers used to 'compost' large volumes of household waste.

Copperfield's proprietor, David McVeigh, says that galvanizing the eight-metre long steel sections used for the innovative roof was an essential feature of the design because the waste composting process creates a hostile and damaging environment for ungalvanized steel, including temperatures of up to 70 degrees C and 100 per cent humidity.

Copperfield Engineering turned to South East to handle the galvanizing work when orders from specialist waste management and recycling companies in many parts of the country started to pour in.

These specialists are mostly sub-contracted by local authorities.

David McVeigh says: "It is good to work with a company that really wants to look after its customer".

South East Galvanizers' sales manager, Neil Pearson, says: "The galvanizing tank that we have here is the largest in the south of England and that was a key factor in our being involved with this exciting new engineering venture."
