Weyerhaeuser launches Lyptus, an environmentally sustainable eucalyptus hardwood to European market.

The Lyptus product line, which over the past five years has been increasingly adopted by manufacturers and specifiers in the United States, is now being distributed throughout Europe by the company's European operation, Weyerhaeuser Products Limited Lyptus is environmentally sustainable because the trees are plantation grown and may be harvested within 14-16 years compared to the 60 years it takes a mahogany tree to mature

European commercial director for Weyerhaeuser, John Guerin, said: "With a declining global wood supply, the need for alternatives to endangered tropical hardwood species is pressing.

The availability of Lyptus products in Europe is therefore a major breakthrough for those involved in the specification or production of timber products.

"The key to this product is the careful process of growing, drying and processing the wood, which is effectively the process signified by the Lyptus brand".

Lyptus timber is remarkably clear, exhibiting fewer knots than many other species, due to the manual pruning process as the crop grows.

Side limbs are removed while the canopy is left intact, encouraging the growth of tall trees with few knots.

Furthermore, with logs air dried for 12 months prior to kiln drying the resulting Lyptus timber is exceptionally straight and dimensionally stable.

Lyptus products include solid wood, plywood and veneer, as well as unfinished and pre-finished flooring.

These products are hardwearing and maintain their appearance over time with minimal fading and oxidising.

Lyptus wood is also relatively easy to work with, with good machining and turning properties and the ability to accept a variety of finishes.

These properties ensure the suitability of Lyptus hardwood for a diverse range of high end applications, such as flooring (both engineered and solid wood), cabinets, architectural millwork, residential and commercial furniture and indoor panelling.

Lyptus lumber is developed through a relationship between Weyerhaeuser and Aracruz Produitos de Madeira in Brazil.

It is grown on plantations with natural forest set asides to protect and enhance native ecosystems.

The plantations are certified to Brazil's national sustainable forestry standard, CER-FLOR, recognised by the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Original species native to the area over 100 years ago have been reintroduced into this ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian national agency, IBAMA has issued Aracruz a certificate for the management of forests.

Like Weyerhaeuser mills in the US, the Brazilian mill uses virtually every portion of the log, converting it not only to timber and by-products, but using residuals such as bio-energy to fuel the mill.

The Brazil operation is fully integrated, with sustainable raw materials, a top class mill, and a sophisticated manufacturing process.

Weyerhaeuser sells into Europe through Weyerhaeuser Products Limited, headquartered in Belgium, in close cooperation with its hardwood sales partner Treforest.
