TJI joists utilised to help create a number of curved pod roofs on a brick and block work mixed residential and commercial development in Milton Keynes.

The ability to provide long spans as well as being lightweight and easy to handle, have seen TJI joists utilised to help create a number of curved pod roofs on a brick and block work mixed residential and commercial development in Milton Keynes.

TJI joists, manufactured by iLevel Trus Joist, sit within a steel framework and support sawn timber trusses onto which are attached curved metal sheets.

The end result is a visually striking roof design that clearly adds to the aesthetic appeal of the contemporary styled development.

The Newhill Place development by Paul Newman New Homes is spread over four sites - the main building consisting of apartments, retail premises, restaurants, a nursery and offices plus two separate apartment blocks and three, four-bed two storey town houses.

Varying lengths of 406mm deep TJI joists for the roofs as well as iLevel Floor Systems for the town houses were supplied by Crendon Timber Engineering.

Engineered wood products, including TJI joists, are increasingly being installed alongside other building systems, including brick and block work, concrete framework and steel.

Besides greater spanning capabilities enhancing design options and being quicker to install than sawn timber, the reduced weight of engineered wood products allows savings to be made in foundation costs.
