Lyptus approved for window manufacture

A Weyerhaeuser Products product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Feb 1, 2008

VFF has approved Lyptus, sustainable eucalyptus hardwood from international forest products company, Weyerhaeuser, as suitable for window manufacture.

Exceptionally straight and dimensionally stable, the properties of Lyptus make it ideally suited to window manufacture, confirmed by its inclusion in the latest list of wood species for window construction.

Approved for the manufacture of all external windows, across residential and commercial applications, Lyptus is expected to be popular with developments where sustainable construction materials must be used.

As the trees are plantation grown and harvested within 14-16 years, compared to the 60 years it takes some tropical species to mature, Lyptus provides a truly sustainable choice where a tropical hardwood is preferred.

Eike Gehrts, technical consultant at German Federation of Window and Curtain Walling Manufacturers (VFF), commented: 'Dimensional stability is a critical factor for the use of timber in windows, and Lyptus has been shown to be stable, even over time.

At present, Lyptus is among a few plantation grown 'tropical replacement hardwoods' approved for windows that has a guaranteed supply from a proven sustainable source'.

Lyptus timber is remarkably clear and exhibits fewer knots than many other species.

It offers window manufacturers and end users a flexible solution because it is easy to work with and can accept a variety of finishes.

Commenting on the approval, John Guerin, European commercial director for Weyerhaeuser, said: 'The approval of Lyptus for window manufacture is another breakthrough for those involved in the specification or production of timber products.

Offering all of the benefits expected of a tropical hardwood, it has the additional advantage of coming from a truly sustainable source.

We've worked hard to establish a reliable supply of Lyptus to Europe, and are committed to further investment in developing our operations'.

Lyptus trees are grown on responsibly managed plantations in Brazil.

These are certified to the national sustainable forestry standard, Cerflor, recognised by the international Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Full PEFC Chain of Custody (COC) certification of the Brazilian mill is expected by February 2008.

Available as solid wood, plywood and veneer, Lyptus products are hardwearing and maintain their appearance over time.

Lyptus is widely used throughout North America and increasingly in Europe for applications such as cabinets, architectural millwork, residential and commercial furniture and indoor panelling.
