Following 235 submissions from countries around the world, an international judging panel, including some of the world's most highly regarded architects and architectural critics, selected a total of five winning projects at a recent ceremony in Vienna.
"Every submission demonstrates the innovative ways in which bricks can be used to create stunning and creative buildings of all kinds", said Andrew Jackson, managing director for Wienerberger UK.
"It's always a tough choice, but the judges consider a number of key criteria including architectural design, innovative ways in which the material has been used, and the functionality of the building".
The overall winner was a residential and office complex in Hungary, where bricks have been skilfully used to integrate the building into a historic environment.
The top 38 submissions are illustrated in Wienerberger's 'Brick 06' book and include a UK project from MBLC Architects and Urbanists.
Located in Manchester suburb West Didsbury, the 'Woods End' project involved the upgrade of a Victorian villa development with a range of high quality apartments.
Designed to respect and enhance the existing qualities of the Victorian complex and mature landscape of the surrounding conservation area, the 16 apartments are arranged over four floors within two 'pavilions'.
The pavilions are a contemporary counterpoint to the villa, framing the existing building and forming a private garden space within the heart of the site.
The company's next European brick awards will take place in 2008.
