The standard is designed to address the delicate balance between maintaining profitability and reducing environmental impact and involves the commitment of the entire organisation.
This standard is recognised along the supply chain as a required level of business performance and now forms a key requirement as part of the supply of building materials to Wienerberger's key customers, particularly amongst major housebuilders.
Only firms with the highest levels of environmental performance, including those with a commitment to the prevention of pollution and continual improvement, achieve the accreditation so naturally John Sandford, technical director for Wienerberger UK, is delighted with the company's achievements.
He said: "Our concern for the environment is a fundamental part of our business strategy".
"Environmental best practice has been at the heart of this business for many years.
Twelve years ago when 'going green' was in its infancy, our Denton site in Greater Manchester became the first clay brick manufacturing plant in the world to achieve the ISO standard for its Environmental Management Systems.
Our staff wanted the plant to operate to the highest standards possible, with the impact on the local community kept to an absolute minimum, and their determination is still true today.
"I would like to extend my thanks to every member of staff across our 14 sites who, due to their on-going commitment, has made this achievement possible".
In addition to the ISO 14001 accreditation, Wienerberger are major participants in the Sustainability Strategy for the UK clay brick manufacturing industry promoted by the Brick Development Association (BDA).
CICS is the leading certification body for quality, environment and health and safety in the UK ceramic manufacturing sector.
