WindowMaster, Europe's largest provider of natural ventilation and smoke detection solutions, has ben chosen to provide window automation systems at London's Lee Valley Athletics Centre.

Twelve months experience of using an innovative natural cooling and ventilation system has strengthened the bid by London's Lee Valley Athletics Centre (LVAC) to become a major athletics training site for the 2012 Olympics LVAC is the largest indoor and outdoor athletics centre serving London and the South of England

It has the only indoor 200 metre track in the region, 60 metre and 130 metre sprint straights, permanent seating for 500 spectators and full indoor jumps and throws facilities.

In addition, it has specialist areas for the delivery of sport science and medical support services, a strength and conditioning gym and other facilities which combine to provide the professional support necessary for the development of elite athletes.

LVAC features a natural cooling and ventilation system designed by consulting engineers Max Fordham LLP which uses 240 WindowMaster motors to operate windows automatically in order to naturally ventilate the main arena and other rooms.

WindowMaster, Europe's largest provider of natural ventilation and smoke detection solutions, was chosen to provide window automation systems because of its ability to provide a complete installation.

In addition to the motors and window actuators the system includes sensors monitoring temperature and carbon dioxide levels, a weather station and a central computer control system.

The weather station monitors external conditions around LVAC, including wind direction and speed, temperature and rain fall.

Changes in wind pressure on the facades are also modelled.

These parameters are programmed into the computer control system where they are analysed along with readings taken from the weather station and sensors fitted internally.

Windows around the building are then precisely controlled and positioned to keep air quality within rooms fresh and the temperature constant.

LVAC was officially opened on Tuesday 16 January 2007 by government minister Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP.

As the centre celebrates its first anniversary, managers are now able to evaluate how it has coped with a full year of weather extremes.

Centre manager Mick Bond said: "The system did very well in coping with hot summer weather".

"It maintained good air quality - which is obviously very important for athletics - whilst keeping the temperature down".

"During the winter we have again been able to maintain reasonable temperatures and a fresh atmosphere".

"We are now confident that we can offer the Olympics organisers a venue which will not only provide a first class training facility but a first class atmosphere, whatever the weather".

Neil Smith of Max Fordham LLP said: "The building is designed to offer stable temperatures by using its thermal mass".

"It cools down at night in the summer and then stays cool during the day".

"The WindowMaster system has proved very capable of giving good air quality without letting excessive hot air into the building during the day, ensuring that the interior temperature during the warmest summer weather was always lower than the external temperature".

The Lee Valley Regional Park where LVAC is situated will be the site of the Olympic white water canoe slalom course as well as the Olympic velodrome and outdoor BMX course.

It is not planned to hold athletics events at LVAC but its proximity to the main athletics stadium, the quality of its facilities and its now proven ability to provide a fresh, temperature-controlled environment will make it an important training and practice facility.
