Wilo's new pump technology makes selection and installation even simpler

Ask your average installer what winds him up most and it'll be unnecessary complexities on the job No one wants to run into problems

We all regularly read 'easy to install' as a regular statement from manufacturers about their own products - on packaging, in articles in magazines - and to be fair, increasingly manufacturers are designing domestic heating products to be less complex to fit.

But strangely, when you are installing a system, you still run into problems that you probably feel shouldn't arise.

Problems that could have been 'designed out' of the product, with a little bit more thought.

So the introduction by Wilo of a 'one size fits all' pump came as a pleasant surprise to installers across the country.

You would have had to be on Mars for the past few years to avoid the ongoing conversation about climate change and energy efficiency here on earth! 1st April 2005 marked the introduction of changes to Building Regulations Part L in England and Wales.

There is pressure on the domestic heating sector to reduce energy consumption and it won't go away.

Be prepared for this pressure to grow in the next few years.

The commercial sector has also experienced growing levels of legislation demanding greater fuel efficiency and the introduction of measures to dramatically reduce energy consumption.

Whilst on the domestic front, you could argue that the circulator is responsible for a very small amount of energy, with 1.6 million new pumps being installed in the UK each year - either as integral parts of combi boilers or as stand alone pumps on conventional systems - 1.6 million energy efficient pumps will make a worthwhile contribution towards energy efficiency on the back of that made by condensing boiler technology, heating controls, and water treatment - each chipping in with their own contributions to the energy efficiency 'pot'.

So you'll not be surprised to hear that Wilo has been investing in redesigning and improving its pumps to create ever more energy efficient circulators for all applications.

One of the most significant advances in pump technology in recent times and one where Wilo has taken a lead, is the new 'one size fits all' circulator.

The Wilo Smart pump has taken off in a big way in the UK and it's hardly surprising.

To 'nick' a well known phrase, it does exactly 'what it says on the tin'! This innovative pump uses standard port sizes, with port to port dimensions of 130mm, fitting standard connections and pipework fittings.

And the simplicity of the pump is added to by the ease of installation benefits designed into it.

The use of 'flats' near the inlet and outlet ports allows the pump to be held securely in place, leaving the installer with both hands free to tighten the unions.

The electrical connections? Again, designed to eliminate the need for cable stripping and screw-in posts.

By incorporating push and fit and lock connecting blocks, straightforwardness has again been built in.

And it's not just installers who have taken a shine to the new Wilo Smart pump.

Merchants are quite impressed too! The introduction of these new pumps means they can reduce their stockholding of pump models and related spare parts, saving shelf space and lowering overheads.

Another tick in the box for the Wilo Smart pump.

So how exactly do these Smart pumps improve energy efficiency? Well, they feature three pre-programmable settings, within which the pump can adjust itself automatically to suit system performance.

Compared to traditional fixed or pre-set circulators, matching pump output to system demand in this way can reduce energy consumption by up to 30%.

This effectively removes the necessity to make manual seasonal adjustments.

Advanced variable speed technology also reduces noise levels bearing in mind that the pump is hardly ever functioning at full capacity.

In addition, Wilo's Smart pump includes a unique de-jamming system - it's able to free direct and minor debris, and this improves operating reliability significantly.

Any other benefits from the Wilo Smart pump? Well, yes there are.

A 'one size fits all' pump is ideal for increasingly popular underfloor heating systems.

The Smart pump doesn't need a manifold so there's a reduction in installation cost, time and effort.

The Wilo Smart pump is capable of functioning across a broad performance range and operating at a high flow rate of 2.75m/h with a maximum head of six metres.

So the new generation of pump technology has huge benefits, and can equally be used as part of a new installation, or retrofitted into an existing one.

So the Wilo Smart pump is simple to install - it really is, try one yourself - and takes the hassle out of pump specification.

There are more than five and a half million Wilo pumps operating across Europe, so join the move to Wilo pump technology.

It's the simple way forward to energy efficient circulation on domestic and light commercial heating systems.
