Wohr parking solution for historic
building

One of Bristol's landmark buildings to benefit from innovative car parking solution supplied and installed by leading parking systems company, Wohr.

One of Bristol's landmark buildings which has lain empty and decaying for 14 years, is to benefit from an innovative car parking solution supplied and installed by leading parking systems company, Wohr The building, 10 Unity Street, which is situated at the heart of the city, is being transformed into 49 contemporary apartments by Carrot, a design-led, property development company

Originally built in 1865 as a college by the Merchant Venturers, the building's high Victorian Gothic architectural style reflects a medieval priory that was once on the site.

Following the Second World War, it was acquired by Bristol Polytechnic, but was finally closed by the University of the West of England in 1992.

Carrot recognised the building's unique development potential and acquired the site in 2004.

However, despite its central location and the innovative electric bicycle pool that is to be made available for the use of residents, the provision of sufficient car parking space proved to be a major issue for the company's development plans.

Carrot Projects Director, David Mellish explained the problem: "The building has a series of structural columns running throughout, which severely restrict the available area for vehicle parking; we calculated that at most we could accommodate nine spaces".

"When the building was originally built, it wasn't designed to cope with the needs of 21st century city-dwellers and their cars, so we required a parking solution that would meet the needs of the building's future occupiers".

Carrot then turned to Wohr, the UK's specialist in the design and installation of mechanical parking systems.

The company identified that despite the restrictions imposed by the structural columns, there was sufficient headroom to allow double stacking of cars and sufficient floor space, behind the columns, to install a complete mechanical parking system.

The company proposed a solution which incorporates both its Combilift and Parklift systems.

The Combilift 551 will provide the majority of spaces, using a combination of vertical stacking and lateral sliding technology.

This two-level system provides independent access to all spaces, with the operation being computer controlled.

Cars are parked on individual, galvanised steel platforms, with each resident being provided with a coded key for the central control panel.

This instructs the system when a specific platform is being requested - either to park on to, or to exit from the garage.

Reflecting the changes in car design and buying trends, the Combilift system can also provide for taller vehicles to be parked.

At Unity Street, four of the upper level spaces have been specified with additional headroom, and so will be capable of accommodating both MPVs and SUVs.

Finally, the remaining available floor space will be fully utilised by the installation of two of Wandouml;hr's Parklift 411 systems.

These units will provide four additional spaces through separate, single width, double level vertical stacking units.

In total, the adoption of this innovative mechanical solution increases the number of available car parking spaces from nine to twenty eight.

"The parking scheme developed with Wohr, has provided a progressive solution for parking at 10 Unity Street, which is consistent with the Carrot concept.".
