New facility for recycling aggregates in Scotland

New aggregate recycling facility, part-funded by WRAP, is set to produce almost 1.5 million tonnes of recycled aggregates and recycled concrete aggregates over the next five years.

A new aggregate recycling facility, part-funded by WRAP (the Waste and Resources Action Programme), is set to produce almost 1.5 million tonnes of recycled aggregates and recycled concrete aggregates over the next five years.

Malcolm Construction Services, part of the Malcolm Group, was awarded andpound;356,677 in funding to complete the andpound;1.4 million project at a disused shipyard in Glasgow.

The new facility, officially opened yesterday, will process construction, demolition and excavation waste collected using skips, bulk tipper haulage and even barges via the quayside facilities available on site.

Mike Falconer Hall, WRAP's Aggregates Capital Project Manager, said: "We are delighted to have supported Malcolm Construction Services with this opportunity, which will help develop Scotland's recycling infrastructure, contributing to the production of a significant tonnage of quality recycled aggregates and therefore reducing reliance on extraction of primary aggregates as well as diverting materials from landfill".

The new facility, following the refurbishment of some of the existing buildings and improvements to the surrounding infrastructure, incorporates a materials separation line, recycled aggregate processing plant and associated mobile equipment.

The aggregate recycling plant will ultimately produce around 350,000 tonnes per annum of 600 and 800 series aggregates, pipe bedding, sand bedding, and recycled concrete aggregates.
