Sign installation and maintenance firm Xmo Strata is pioneering a new NVQ training model.

Sign installation and maintenance firm Xmo Strata is pioneering a new NVQ training model The firm is believed to be the first in the forecourt industry to become a 'Skills Academy'

The concept amounts to a combination of existing training and certification schemes, and training delivery methods; participating employees completing the programme will end up with a Construction Skills Certification Scheme skilled worker card.

Under the model, health and safety and training consultancy SMTS, will effectively train Xmo Strata's own staff to become NVQ assessors, so the company can award NVQs internally.

In order to run the scheme, SMTS is working with a large number of partners including construction firms, Further Education Colleges, and other training providers, such as Chris Wall of the Skills Gateway.

SMTS will initially train one senior manager and three supervisors to become accredited assessors.

These four will begin a programme of training and assessment which will roll out to all Xmo Strata sign installation and maintenance engineers over the next 12 months.

Once existing employees have completed their training, the programme will continue to provide training and assessment for new employees.

Xmo Strata already claims to have the most highly qualified installation and maintenance engineers in the industry, but Managing Director Steve Martin said: "The industry needs continual leadership on training, and this will take sign engineers in our company to a credentials level never before seen in the industry.

Continuous training is part of our commitment to achieving a true Incident and Injury Free working environment".

SMTS Managing Director Jamie Cliffe said: "An NVQ is the driving license for industry, it gives you a status in your job, and NVQs cover most industries.

The Government has signalled very strongly that it would like small and medium sized companies to help tackle the skills shortage in the UK, and schemes like this will make a significant contribution to solving that problem.

"Xmo Strata employees who complete this programme will end up with a Construction Skills Certification Scheme skilled worker card, which has got to be good for the employee, the employer, and - in the case of a service company like Xmo Strata - the customer.".
