Protecting the comms room against power outages is essential, as any power cut would have a detrimental effect on the running of the research facilities.

Power quality must be assured at all times and the computing systems must be able to work through the worst possible mains failure scenarios.

To ensure that there is no break in power Shenton Group engineers have specified a Scorpion Sterling series 350kVA generator together with 4 x 40kVA parallel-connected UPS.

Each UPS has its own 10-minute battery pack to provide protection to the critical load whilst the generator starts.

The UPS are installed in parallel operation to provide N+1 redundancy.

Should one of the UPS fail the other two systems can take over powering the installation, without any disruptions to the loads.

By installing a complete power support system, Cancer Research UK has ensured a seamless transition from mains power to standby power in the event of a power outage.

The generator/UPS installation includes a specially designed exhaust system to direct hot gases and fumes away from the building and an AMF panel that automatically switches the whole system back to utility power when the mains.
