Environmental energy saving device wins patent

A Zenex Technologies product story

Trials show that Zenex Technologies' GasSaver can reduce gas consumption required for domestic hot water by up to 50%, representing significant cost savings for consumers

A boiler flue attachment that recovers heat from the waste combustion gases and uses it to pre-heat the domestic hot water (DHW) supply has been awarded a patent from the UK Patent Office.

The trials show that Zenex Technologies' GasSaver can reduce gas consumption required for DHW by up to 50%, representing significant cost savings for consumers and making a useful contribution to protecting the environment.

The Zenex GasSaver uses a flue gas condenser to condense the water in the flue gases into a condensate store of some 7 litres.

The incoming cold mains water passes through one heat exchanger in the store and another in the flue and heat is transferred so as to pre-heat the DHW.

The water is heated to a temperature as high as 80C after which it is mixed with cold mains water to reduce the temperature to 30C for entry to the boiler.

"The boiler doesn't have to work so hard, which saves gas and, as it produces hotter water faster, it also saves on water usage as well," explains the GasSaver's inventor and Managing Director of Zenex Technologies Chris Farrell.

Independent tests by EN13203 accredited establishments in both Holland and the UK show that overall annual average gas savings for domestic heating of between 7% and 14% can be achieved when the GasSaver is fitted in conjunction with modern SEDBUK A rated condensing boilers.

With less efficient boilers the savings are greater.

There is also a saving of 5% in the domestic hot water used.

"The figures may seem incredible," says Chris Farrell.

"But they are supported by the results being achieved at various sites around the country where the GasSaver has been installed in housing developments for nearly two years".

"By fitting a SEDBUK A boiler and a Zenex GasSaver many people have cut their gas bill by 50%".

Boiler manufacturer Alphatherm is already offering Zenex's GasSaver as an energy-saving addition to its Alpha boilers and Zenex reports other leading manufacturers are showing increasing interest.

"We're delighted to have been awarded the patent for the GasSaver," says Chris.

"Some 'environmental' devices currently being touted have payback periods running into decades".

"Our GasSaver is simple technology and offers a payback in around four years".

"Tests are now being undertaken by the Building Research Establishment at Watford to determine the eligibility of the GasSaver within the SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) requirements and we look forward to the results of these" Further information on the GasSaver is available from the company's web site.
