MP initiates campaign about energy saving products

A Zenex Technologies product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Nov 5, 2008

West Devon MP Gary Streeter is creating a campaign for the Government to update and correct the range of products that are classified as energy saving.

Mr Streeter says that, if current regulations were more accurate, consumers would be able to make better energy efficiency savings.

In Plymouth, Zenex Technologies has developed and manufactured the GasSaver, a simple device that fits above the boiler and recovers heat from the flue gases.

It effectively condenses the steam in the flue gases and preheats the incoming cold main.

This heat, normally lost from most modern boilers, can often be seen as plumes of steam or hot water vapour streaming from domestic boiler flues.

Tests on the GasSaver by certified independent bodies showed that the annual saving of the gas required to produce domestic hot water is some 50%.

However, current Government regulations do not recognise the true extent of the savings and the GasSaver is therefore not included in best practice guidelines.

Mr Streeter said: "There are significant energy savings to be made from even the most efficient modern boilers through installing the Zenex GasSaver".

"However, red tape is preventing the mass adoption of the product".

"If the regulations were changed thousands could make energy efficiency savings and a considerable number of jobs would be created in UK manufacturing".

"In the past 28 years, I have never seen a product with such enormous potential, which is why I am calling for the Government's procedures to change".

"Products such as the GasSaver are essential if the UK is to meet its ambitious targets on reducing carbon emissions".

Tony Billett, Chairman of Zenex Technologies, said: "We are pleased to have Gary Streeter's support for this campaign".

"Independent tests have shown there are significant energy savings to be made from even the most efficient modern boilers which is why we think the Government should correct the errors in UK regulations".

"The GasSaver is being used in sites across the country, including Plymouth Pavilions Leisure Centre and Theatre Royal where Zenex energy efficiency technology saves 53% of their gas bill".

"Plymouth Pavilions recovered their cost in 10 months".

"This is the best payback we have achieved! The normal payback for the domestic user is between 3 and 5 years and this is so much shorter than most other so-called "energy efficiency" measures available on the market".

Earlier this year, the Energy Saving Trust recognised the Zenex GasSaver under its Energy Saving Recommended scheme and established a new product endorsement category - "Passive Flue Gas Heat Recovery Devices and Systems".
