Sarah and Hadley using a Space to Change toilet at Portsmouth International Port

Portsmouth becomes Britain’s most accessible major sea port

  • 24 Aug 2016

Portsmouth International Port has become the most accessible major sea travel hub in the UK with the opening of a Space to Change specialist toilet and changing facility.

Space to Change is an enhanced wheelchair-accessible toilet supplied by Clos-o-Mat. The facility features a 7.5m2+ (3m x 2.5m min) toilet, as well as an adult-sized height-adjustable changing bench and ceiling tracking hoist.

Portsmouth International Port specified a Space to Change toilet after it was made aware that its standard accessible toilet did not meet the needs of one of its frequent travellers, Sarah Brisdion, whose son Hadley had Cerebral Palsy and required additional equipment to use the facilities.

As Space to Change enhances existing conventional wheelchair-accessible toilets, making the changes did not incur the delays, costs and disruption of significant building work.

The toilets plug the gap between conventional (Building Regulations Approved Document M 2013) wheelchair-accessible toilets and ‘desirable’ Changing Places toilets.

The new concept – which has been developed with leading Changing Place campaigners including Sarah Brisdion and Clos-o-Mat – enables venues that are limited financially and/or on space to meet the needs of disabled people who require changing and lifting facilities for their personal hygiene.

For full details of the Space to Change concept, in addition to technical support and CAD blocks, can be found on the Clos-o-Mat website.
