Rooflights provide natural lighting for Heathrow Airport’s new terminal

Brett Martin’s Trilite rooflights have been installed to provide Terminal 2A with natural lighting

Lakesmere Group was tasked with designing and installing Terminal 2A’s wave form aluminium roof, which has been developed to have a geometrically complex structure.

Brett Martin’s GRP Trilite rooflights were specified as part of the roofing system to introduce natural light into the terminal.

The rooflight sheets, which are made up from a liner panel and outer weather sheet, can be expanded on to include an intermediate sheet which forms a triple skin.

This makes them suitable for installation on sloping or pitched roofs.

Just under 1,500 metres of the rooflight sheets were installed in the downslopes of the roof’s wave sections to allow for a more even spread of daylight.

This minimises the risk of solar glare and hot spots, which could both cause discomfort for the 20 million passengers that will be passing through the terminal each year.

Each rooflight sheet is 24 metres long with a handrail and walkway system included to allow for maintenance and cleaning.

Brett Martin has designed its Trilite rooflight sheets for use in a range of industrial and commercial applications.

They are available in different variations with more than 1,000 profiles and seven sheet thicknesses to choose from.

The rooflights have been certified by the BBA and accredited as Class B non-fragile to ACR[M]001.
