GPS Excel (PE100) water pipe and GPS PE80 gas pipe
PE piping for the water and gas infrastructure was supplied by GPS PE Pipe systems as part of Premier Inn ’s £125 million airport hotel build programme
The Stansted hotel, part of the Premier Inn drive to become the UK’s top airport hotel provider, was constructed by main contractor, McAleer & Rushe.
It was close to existing water and gas mains, but there was no existing pipe work connecting the site to the utilities.
So H J Services & Sons laid:
- 192 metres of GPS Excel (PE100) water pipe
- 312 metres of GPS PE80 gas pipe
PE pipe for the installation was specified by McAleer & Rushe specified because of proven performance, competitive cost and durability.
Both gas and water pipes were laid in an open cut installation with lengths of pipe welded together to form strings before being lowered into the trench.
For the water pipe installation used by H J Services & Sons included:
- 125mm and 90mm blue Excel piping in SDR17 to manage varying levels of water pressure, which reaches six bar in some areas of the site.
- 180mm diameter size of yellow PE80 pipe in SDR17.6 to ensure that there is sufficient flow of gas to serve the new hotel’s ongoing requirements.
Dan Morgan from H J Services & Sons said, ’One of the many advantages of using PE pipe is that we can adjust the diameter and SDR of the pipe for different parts of the site to adapt to the available water or gas pressure.
The pipe networks have been fast and trouble-free to install and connect up to the mains and will provide a safe and reliable gas and water supply to the hotel for a service life of at least 100 years’.
