Schlüter linear drainage installed for seamless tiled finish

  • 4 May 2016

A linear drainage system designed by Schlüter-Systems has been specified by Quinn Architects for a recently renovated Barbican tower apartment.

The Barbican is a designated site of special architectural interest, as one of London’s best examples of concrete brutalist architecture.

Quinn Architects were tasked to renovate an eleventh floor apartment in the Grade-II listed estate. The project’s focus was clear, practical and flexible living.

Quinn Architects rented a workshop in Camberwell and set about designing and prototyping and manufacturing every detail in the apartment directly over a period of nine months.

Views from the Barbican apartment

The Barbican eleventh floor apartment offers spectacular views across South West London.

The apartment’s bathroom comprised the original 100x100mm white ceramic bathroom tiles, which have been maintained and complemented with new details such as continuous terrazzo flooring – a subtle nod to CB&Ps original intention to clad the building in marble.

In the en-suite shower room, specially cut 300x75mm Italian Limestone tiles are fitted within the original module.

The Schlüter-KERDI-LINE linear drainage system was specified, due to its ease of installation and minimalist aesthetic, which allowed the bathroom tiles to remain visually uninterrupted.

The scheme attempts to demonstrate how historical interiors can be updated and modernised whilst repeating the original architectural character and atmosphere.
