Abro Engineering commissioned Acrow to replace parts of the 11 metre high water ride which required maintenance, with handrails, the main platform and parts of the flumes being replaced. The galvanising treatment helps to protect the steel in the wet environment and Acrow worked alongside the park to help ensure minimum impact on footfall.

Designed by landscape gardener, Bunny Guinness, the sculpture required half a tonne of tubular light-weight steel to create the arched frame in the school courtyard, which was galvanised with acid etched to remove the shiny outcome and create a rustic effect. Commissioned by Glasgow Housing Association with the support of Creative Scotland, the compass is displayed in the new public space and highlights the historical importance of The Shilling Ground.

Gary Higginbottom, Project Manager at Centregreat Engineering Ltd, said: “Galvanising offers the perfect finish for steel, particularly in a marine environment where corrosion is sped up because of the damp atmosphere.”

The galvanising work will offer long term protection for pedestrians and reduces the need for frequent maintenance to be carried out at the site, which could be inconvenient to commuters due to the location of the bridge.
