Crown Paints has reached the final stage in the Sustainable Innovation category of the British Coatings Federation (BCF) Awards. This is for its significant reduction of its environmental impact across its transport and haulage operations.
Crown Paints, owned by Hempel A/S, created its Sustainable Transport Project to support Hempel’s ambition of becoming carbon neutral across its own operations by 2025.

Through radically transforming its supply chain, delivery and waste recovery processes, Crown Paints’ projects have seen the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 500,000kg over three years, whilst maintaining a positive service.

Mike Stevens, Head of Logistics and Planning at Crown Paints, comments: “Working in partnership with logistics partners, customers and our store network of Crown Decorating Centres (CDCs), Crown has consolidated delivery drops to reduce mileage, driving a carbon dioxide reduction of 33,178kg per year.
“We’ve also encouraged the return and recycling of used pallets, with 11,000 pallets collected and reused to date, saving 222 tonnes of timber.”
Darryl Senior, Vice President, Operations Decorative at Hempel, adds: “This project is a great example of the drive and passion of our UK team working collaboratively across functions to develop a sustainable transport solution that reduces CO2 emissions.
“Our journey will continue, and we look forward to many more achievements as we further advance our goal of being sustainability leaders.”
