CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate has been specified by Andas Homes for barn house renovations in Wetherby, West Yorkshire. With ambitions to make the renovations as sustainable as possible, the team wanted eco-friendly building materials and felt that CUPA R18 would be ideal due to its natural properties.
Originally built over 160 years ago, the barns in Wetherby were diligently renovated by Andas Homes to become a selection of stunning family properties. Throughout the renovation, space and quality were prioritised to achieve a luxurious finish, and the overall design looked to complement and maximise the picturesque surrounding views.
With a focus on biophilic design, Andas Homes seeks to ensure its projects are designed with a real connection to the natural world. This includes using materials that are non-toxic, eco-friendly and sustainable. The team were looking for a sustainable roofing solution for the barns that would also complement the original design features.
The architect, Dormer & Co., suggested CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate, having attended a CPD previously. The Andas Homes team met with the local CUPA PIZARRAS representative to find out more about the company and the sustainability credentials of its natural slate.
CUPA PIZARRAS slate is 100% natural and has the lowest carbon footprint of any roofing material. Its production process is also highly efficient, using minimal amounts of water and energy, and no chemicals. CUPA PIZARRAS has achieved a Net Zero certification, EcoVadis Gold Medal and BRE Global verification of its EPD.
Furthermore, the CUPA PIZARRAS slates also have impressive performance credentials, withstanding any weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, UV light and acid rain. The product is also durable and will last for 100 years and requires no maintenance.
Michael Simpson, from Andas Homes, comments: “We loved the finish of the CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate. We specified the use of the slate due to its sustainable properties and found that it was perfect fit for our desired aesthetic.”
The project’s contractor, Cousin’s Roofing, had previously worked with CUPA PIZARRAS natural slate and also encouraged its use for this project. Despite dealing with some difficult design aspects, such as sprocketed eaves, which led in to hips only wide enough for one slate, the roofer, Phil Marson, said that he enjoyed using the slate.
“The product is a great natural slate to use and always looks amazing when it is laid correctly. We often recommend CUPA R18 when asked what product would look nice on a project,” he comments.
