Kilbroney Timber Frame has specified DuPont Tyvek Reflex and DuPont AirGuard to achieve impressive results at a new timber frame private home in Rostrevor, Ireland.
Built to special commission, the two-storey construction features a warm-pitched roof and attic rooms, and offers three bedrooms and a large open plan kitchen and living area with a vaulted ceiling.
For this project, Kilbrony Timber Frame chose to install DuPont Tyvek Reflex to the external walls over an ecologically source timber frame.
The company applied DuPont AirGuard Reflective AVCL to the interior walls and fitted 140mm of insulation board and a service batten in between.
The walls were finished internally with plasterboard and externally rendered. The building also features a slate roof covering and Alu clad and double glazed windows.
The use of the DuPont membrane system delivered some impressive results, with pressure tests for airtightness coming in as 0.94m2/(h.m2)@50Pa. The building also scored u-values of 0.12W/m2k for the timber frame external walls, the ceilings and the vaulted ceiling.
DuPont Tyvek Reflex is a vapour permeable, weathertight membrane designed for timber frame and vertical cladding where its properties allow water vapour to diffuse from the structure. The membrane features a low-emissivity surface which prevents the metallised surface from oxidising, ensuring long term performance.
Combining high reflectivity and low emissivity, DuPont AirGuard Reflective is a metallised air and vapour control layer. The AVCL is 100 percent airtight and protects against vapour transmission from the interior into the building envelope.
Both DuPont membranes are fully certified including to CE and BBA documentation. Find out more on the Tyvek website.

There are a range of initiatives that are encouraging manufacturers and specifiers to think about how they work and the products they use – one manufacturer championing these is Danish wood wool panel manufacturer Troldtekt.
