IKO plc has won the UK Roofing Award for Best Mastic Asphalt and Hot-Melt project, for its work on Westminster Cathedral with Knight Asphalte.
The Grade 1 listed Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Before IKO and its partner contractors could begin working on the building, their experience in working on historical buildings had to be carefully examined. St Ann’s Gate Architects eventually confirmed IKO’s suitability, through its previous involvement with St Paul’s and Canterbury Cathedrals.
The Cathedral’s existing asphalt was replaced with 600 to 700 square feet of IKO’s Permaphalt polymer modified mastic asphalt. When carrying out the installation, IKO faced a number of challenges: for instance, the team had to work around the historic roof’s Byzantine slopes and curves, which were originally built in the late 1800s.
The material was hand-laid on the exposed roof; the project was completed whilst the building was in constant operation.
The Roofing Awards aims to celebrate the most challenging roofing projects, which have been completed and carried out across the UK. IKO’s work on Westminster Cathedral was commended by the judges for the outstanding workmanship and craftsmanship that was required to complete it.
IKO was also shortlisted for two other projects in the Mastic Asphalt and Hot Melt category: the British Museum with Briggs Amasco, and Guildhall Southampton with Survey Roofing.
