A former cigar factory has been transformed into a residential complex, incorporating business premises, shops and lush outdoor spaces. Reynaers SL 38 has been specified to create a modern, yet industrial, aesthetic.
The former Van der Elst cigar factory, which is based in Leuven, has undergone many renovations since its establishment in 1875. Its latest refurbishment was orchestrated by Jaspers-Eyers Architects; the new ‘7Even Gardens’ complex combines urban architectural styles with the traditional.
The original site was completely redeveloped: a number of buildings were demolished to create space for the gardens, which are constructed around the three renovated structures and a new-build block. The office spaces and residential units benefit from high ceilings and natural lighting.
However, to preserve the original character of the building, its existing column structure has been maintained. Its technical architectural features have been kept as visible as possible, reinforcing the complex’s industrial aesthetic.
Slim line aluminium windows from Reynaers were specified to complement the building’s urban style. Imitating the look of the original window frames, the steel-look Slim Line 38 is an advancement of the company’s original CS 38 window system, which also features in the project.
Suitable for use in new build and renovation projects, the system is available in three design variants – Cubic, Ferro and Classic. Its slim lines allow for the installation of large glass panes, with a thickness of up to 55mm.
The frame is reinforced by an invisible drainage system, whilst a design modification allows for hidden hinges, enhancing the minimalist aesthetic. An insulated three-chamber system ensures increased thermal properties; depending on the configuration, the SL 38 can achieve U-vales of 1.4W/m2/K or greater.
The system boasts an air tightness of Class 4 (600Pa), a water tightness of Class 91 (600Pa), a fire resistance of Class EW 30 and a burglar resistance class of 2.
