Rural Energy opens biomass training centre for engineers

Rural Energy’s new training centre offers engineers the chance to up-skill with biomass technology

Since the launch of the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), many UK businesses are offering specialist biomass technology. With engineers such as gas boiler and solar PV installers looking to enhance their skills by adding biomass to their service offering, Rural Energy decided to open its own Biomass Training and Skills Centre in Leicestershire.

The company’s training space has been fitted with various Herz biomass boilers, which Rural Energy supplies, giving students the opportunity to gain practical experience in operating biomass boilers in a safe and controlled environment.

The facility includes a teaching classroom and a 1,800 square foot mechanical and electrical training arena to provide training on all aspects of biomass design, installation and commissioning.

Engineers are encouraged by Biomass Product Trainers, who act as tutors, to adopt a hands-on approach as they learn about the operation of the boiler and take fuel feeds, augers and grates.

The courses cover a range of topics including biomass boilers, control systems, fuel feed options and fuel quality. Mechanical and electrical aspects of installation and operation, maintenance and servicing are also included.

To reduce the need for issue resolution and to ensure the safety of Rural Energy’s distribution network, students must complete further on-site training and inspection after leaving the facility. They are required to do this until the company is satisfied with their performance and capability.
