Single ply roofing membrane used for activity centre refurbishment

  • 3 Aug 2015

The Trust delivers outdoor activity programmes for young people at its Hollowford Centre in the Peak District; however, growing demand for its resources has prompted the Trust to upgrade its facilities and extend the main building.

As a result, the front façade has been extended, and a corridor has been converted into a new reception area featuring a curving, flat roof and floor to ceiling windows.

Protan’s SE single ply membrane for the roof refurbishment was selected for Hollowford Centre’s roof refurbishment

FCB Roofing specified Protan’s SE single ply membrane for the roof construction.

Roof refurbishment

The new section of roofing features over both the entrance canopy and the new extension.

It comprises plywood decking and a vapour control layer (loose laid and sealed), topped with insulation and covered with Protan SE 1.2mm dark grey membrane.

For the main roof areas, FCB mechanically secured the Protan membrane through 120mm thick insulation with thermally-broken fixings to achieve a U value of 0.18w/m2K to the main roof areas.

It further strapped and welded the perimeter to address wind uplift arising from the site’s exposed location.

The gutter valley between the canopy and new extension was created by mechanically fixing Protan SE membrane over 70mm thick insulation.

Protan SE membrane

Protan SE single ply membrane is available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm. It has been developed to cope with extreme weather conditions without impairment – certified to ? -30°.

The membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.

Protan SE is also certified to deliver the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and achieves an A rating under the Green Guide.
