Western Red Cedar Shakes provide a traditional aesthetic for a modern build

JB Shakes helped to combine contemporary design with tradition

Situated on the 100 year old Archerfield estate, the Nike Golf Performance Fitting Centre provides for professional coaching teams and offers club fittings.

The facility combines traditional values with high performance; to reflect this, Aitken Turnbull Architects used John Brash’s Western Red Cedar Shakes on the roof of the building.

Able to create a contemporary feel as well as a traditional aesthetic, the JB Shakes made a significant contribution to the merging of the two styles.

Whilst their colour is rich, warm and traditional, the shakes’ ability to adapt to different building structures is a modern design feature.

The JB Shakes’ wood contains natural preservatives which allow them to gradually change colour as weathering occurs.

Eventually, they will become a silver-grey shade that compliments the historic site and blends in with the grounds of Archerfield estate.

John Brash’s shakes are also sustainable products, incorporating a low carbon design and containing properties that allow for thermal insulation.
