GUEST ARTICLE: Cheapest place for renters to insure their contents revealed

  • 10 Sep 2019

British renters have the cheapest annual contents insurance premiums in Scottish towns Kirkcaldy and Galashiels, according to new findings from MoneySuperMarket

Research from the UK’s leading price comparison website, which analysed tenants insurance enquiries from the first six months of 2019, found that renters in Kirkcaldy and Galashiels pay an average of £53 and £54 respectively, compared to a UK average of £63.

By contrast, insuring contents within West London will cost renters £101 for the year – more than anywhere else in the UK and 91% higher than the cheapest locations. In fact, London dominates the list of costliest places for renters insuring their belongings, with the top 11 spots all being postcodes from within the capital.

Elsewhere in the country, Slough (£74), Manchester (£71) and Dartford (£68) have the highest premiums outside the capital.

Helen Chambers, head of home insurance at MoneySuperMarket, commented: “It is down to the tenant to insure contents kept in the property and it is a form of protection that can be invaluable when it comes to replacing essential items in your home.

“Generally, you would not need to worry about buildings insurance as this is the responsibility of the landlord, although it is worth checking this is included in your contract to be sure.

“In order to get the most accurate quote for your contents insurance, you may want to make a list of the items in your home, such as laptops, jewellery and bicycles to then work out an accumulative value.

“It’s worth shopping around for the best deal with the correct level of cover before taking out your insurance.”
