Aesthetic drainage system specified for Cardiff school

  • 14 Aug 2015

The facility, which claims to be the largest learning facilities of its type in Wales, comprises of a mainstream comprehensive school with 1,280 places and a special needs school for 205 pupils with learning and physical difficulties.

JDP supplied its Hauraton RECYFIX PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings to the school

JDP was approached by ground works contractor Churngold Construction to supply a water drainage solution which would meet the high aesthetic design requirements of the project.

Effective drainage system

As the site was flat, and many of the buildings were surrounded by blocked and asphalted surfaces, an effective rainwater drainage system was an essential requirement.

For the asphalted yards and car park JDP supplied its Hauraton RECYFIX PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings.

The FIBRETEX C250, HEELSAFE gratings are designed to enhance the flow of water into the channel whilst being safe for pedestrians. The slots are smooth, elliptical openings, with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges.

As well as enhancing their appearance, this feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots.

Aesthetic design requirements

A key area where the balance between effective drainage performance and aesthetics was most critical was on the blocked walkways.

The specification required the walkways to be as unobtrusive as possible and yet satisfy the drainage requirements. This was achieved by the supply of RECFIX STANDARD SLOTTED channels fitted with symmetrical galvanised steel gratings.

This system provides a modest, narrow line of slots in the paved surfaces.
