The new buildings have been designed by Simon Kwan and Associates to remain carbon neutral throughout their lifetime.
They have been fitted with energy saving technologies, such as a hybrid natural ventilation system where users must pay to use air conditioning, to reduce energy consumption and help the architects achieve their goal.
Phases 3a and 3b of the Hong Kong Science Park development, which achieved the Grand Award at the Green Building Awards in November 2014, are using over 2,000 window actutors from SE Controls to increase the buildings’ energy efficiency further.
The company’s actuators have been specifed to manage indoor air quality and provide natural ventilation to the new buildings.
The windows are automated using 1,000 SE Controls SECO N 24 40 compact single chain actuators. The actuators control the single sided, double opening natural ventilation system.
Double opening window units with high and low apertures have been used to ventilate warm air through the top vent. The design also allows cooler fresh air to enter the buildings through the lower vent.
The windows can be opened manually on every floor, which enables the buildings’ occupants to open and close each individual unit.
