Kingspan OPTIM-R provides insulation for seaside farmhouse

  • 7 Jan 2015

This Cornish cottage was built with Kingspan OPTIM-R Insulation specified for use within the roof terrace

At 40mm thick, Kingspan’s OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System uses vacuum technology to achieve a thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m-K. The systems, which all hold LABC System Approval, include OPTIM-R Flex infill panels, which can be cut to fill obscure spaces or fit around existing structures.

Using Kingspan’s OPTIM-R insulation ensured that there was no awkward step up from the interior floor out on to the roof terrace

The OPTIM-R Flex infill panels enabled the project’s architects at Charles Green Design to achieve the targeted U-value of 0.16 W/m².K with a minimal build-up. This solved a potential problem, as the thickness of a conventional insulation product would’ve required the terrace to be raised higher than the internal floor level. Thus, Kingspan’s OPTIM-R System prevented the creation of an awkward step up to the terrace, as well as allowing the builders to install the terrace without having to adjust the height of the kitchen ceiling below.

The farmhouse’s OPTIM-R Balcony & Terrace System, supplied by Minster Insulation and Drylining, was installed above Kingspan Thermataper TT47 LPC/FM by Asphaltic Co. (CWLL) to guarantee the required fall. Its panels also featured a microporous core, evacuated, encased and sealed in a gas-tight envelope.
