With its latest figures, CRUK has revealed that 113,000 tonnes of carpet were recycled, reused or recovered for energy in 2014. This is 6,000 tonnes more than the 2013 rate.
65% of the diversion of carpet from landfill was for energy recovery, whilst reuse and recycling made up for 35% of the diversion.
Certain divisions, such as fibre recovery for felts, contributed greatly to the growth in recycling as floor contractors and retailers saw the benefits of sourcing recycled fitting offcuts and materials.
The increase in energy recovery is suspected to follow the trend for MSW incineration in the UK.
More than 1.2 million carpet tiles were also diverted from landfill to reuse, recycle or use for energy recovery purposes in 2014.
With initiatives such as the WRAP Carpet Recycling Guide promoting the benefits of recycling, carpet tile reuse is expected to rise further in 2015.
CRUK also grew by 10% in 2014, now boasting 86 members. Because of its successes in 2014, it has already surpassed its goal to achieve 25% diversion of carpet from landfill by 2015.
The company will be hosting its 7th Annual Conference to celebrate its members’ successes in reusing, recycling and recovering carpets by presenting them with awards. The conference is set to take place in Birmingham on 11th June 2015.
