Within the guide, the NHBC gives examples of typical house types along with a list of the measures needed to ensure the buildings comply with Approved Document Part L 2013.
The guide also educates on the effects of thermal bridging which can have an impact on the approaches to overall compliance with the legislation.
To demonstrate compliance with Part L, new homes must focus on fabric performance and have an improvement to CO2 targets of approximately 6%.
For non-domestic buildings, there must be a 9% improvement.
The legislation also states that there is to be no uplift in fabric energy efficiency standards for work on existing buildings.
Part L 2013 applies to all building work that started after 6th April 2014.
However, it does not apply if the local authorities received a building notice, initial notice or a full planning application before this date.
For these projects, 6th April 2015 is the cut-off point; the new regulations will be enforced if work commences following this date.
The guide, entitled ‘Part L – Where to Start’ is available for users to download from the NHBC’s website.
